Summer School Registration- 2024

NHUHSD Families

Dear Parent/Guardian:

Northern Humboldt Union High School District will offer summer school through in-person learning. With site principal approval, students demonstrating a unique need may take online courses through virtual learning/Independent Study. Please note, students who have not been successful in Independent Study in the past will not qualify for summer school Independent Study.  Students will need to complete an Independent Study Request Form in order to be considered.   If approved, a link to the Independent Study registration form will be sent to you for completion.  If denied, you will need to register via the in-person registration form.

Our program will consist of two three-week sessions, allowing students to take multiple courses and earn up to five credits per class in person and no more than ten additional credits in Independent Study per session with prior site principal approval. Students not eligible for the Independent Study program will be required to attend an in-person credit recovery learning lab, in which they will take their online courses. Please see your counselor to make a tailored plan for students over ten credits behind. If your student has received a Semester 1 or 2 course grade of a D in any A-G course, that class must be repeated in summer school to satisfy university/college entrance requirements. Session 1 will run from June 24th to July 12th, with July 4th and July 5th being holidays, and Session 2 will run from July 15th through July 31st. Classes will be held 8 am - 1 pm. The program will be held on the McKinleyville High School campus.

Students taking a class, or classes, online through virtual learning/Independent Study are required to attend a one-hour orientation and a weekly in-person meeting with a teacher throughout the summer program, or they will not earn credits. Parents must attend one of the following one-hour orientations before starting: Thursday, June 20, from 6:00 - 7:00 pm or Friday, June 21, from 12:00 -1:00 pm at the McKinleyville High School Library.

Priority registration materials are due on or before May 24th. Please go to www.nohum.org and view the Summer School link under News & Announcements to complete your registration form.

Summer school's main goal is to maintain students’ ability to graduate. Therefore, most courses are being offered for remediation. Remediation refers to the enrollment of students who have previously taken the course and would like to improve their grade or their knowledge of the material. Students who sign up for in-person classes can miss no more than 2 days each semester to earn credit in the course.

Summer school is not a means to accelerate through an academic curriculum. When registering for academic courses, students should consider whether the six-week summer school curriculum would adequately prepare them for future success in the subject area.

If you have any questions regarding summer school, please contact summer school principal Jeff Mielke ([email protected]) or your student’s school counselor.

Sincerely,

Roger Macdonald, Superintendent
